Moynaq
From Khiva, we drove north to Moynaq, where the Aral Sea used to be, but is now some 60km or so away. This hasn't been good for this former fishing village. We crossed over a truly crap pontoon bridge over the Amu Darya river in Karakalpakstan, saw a strange structure on a hill far away, somewhere south of Nukus, saw an interesting cemetary that looks like a city of it's own in Nukus, saw the beached rusting hulks on the sand in Moynaq, and saw another interesting cemetary on the way back, many kilometers from any other identifiable structure or anything else that implied people were even in the area. We also drove past our turn and went a very different way back to Khiva. We asked for directions a lot. Some of them were bad.
