Construction Site Fire in Dubai

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

One of the buildings under construction caught fire this morning. It’s two buildings away from where I work. Here’s the long range view, where we weren’t quite sure exactly which one it was yet.

A couple of shots from around the back. We couldn’t quite get me dropped off at the normal place as the roads were blocked off and some cars were actually flowing back out the wrong way.

We’re In The Philippines By The Way

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Oh yeah, we’re on vacation again. As a matter of fact we’re at the halfway point. We flew into Manila, spent a few days, saw an island in a volcanic lake on an island in a lake on an island in the ocean. We went to one beach resort in Dumaguete (Dauin actually) in Negros and are now at another in Bohol. We spend another few days here, then back to Manila for a couple days, and then back to the daily grind in the UAE, though of course the added element of needing to find the next job will be present as well.

2006 UAE Gallery Uploaded

Monday, December 18th, 2006

The 2006 UAE Gallery contains various pictures from out and about here. A few obligatory shots of the Burj Al Arab, our apartment, some friends that have stopped by to see us, and some general shots from our window into Dubai Marina. Actually, it’s about time to take some more as the construction has really gone crazy in the area. We’ll have some time off coming up at the end of the year for Arafat / Eid / New Year’s so that’ll be a good time to take some more picture. Of course, that’ll be for the 2007 Gallery I guess.

Never Take Their Word For It

Friday, July 23rd, 2004

Sigh…here’s the latest travel fiasco they’ve hit me with.

I put in for R&R with a departure from Sharjah (an airport in the UAE) to Tashkent. They have a direct flight from there 2 days a week, at a fare of somewhere around $600. I think the one I looked at left around noon, and arrived about 3PM.

The proposed itinerary I got has me leaving from Dubai (still in the UAE) at 2:50AM with a 4ish hour flight to Istanbul, where I wait 12 hours, and take a 3-4 hour flight to Tashkent, which arrives at 1:15AM. Add in a couple hours each side and you have a hell of a long day. This ticket is almost $1200. I advised them this was not an acceptable option. Smile

Somebody’s a schmuck…just don’t know who. Just not gonna let it be me. Wink
